Strawberry Hill On : Red House Painters I By : The Red House Painters Tuning : DGCFAD The previous version I posted is quite wrong I think : I had read somewhere that the song was in standard tuning - and I think it's 100% right. Plus this is a lot easier to play. Intro : There's that arpeggio with a strong phasing effect that keeps me from transcribing it. But then you go : Strum____________________________ ---------------- --------0-0----- 0---------0----- ---------------- -------0----0-0- ------------0-0- 8---------7----- ---------------- -----0---------- ---------------- 0---------0----- ---------------- ---0------------ ---------------- 0---------0----- ---------------- ...twice. --3------2------ ---------------- x---------x----- ---------------- 3---------2----- ---------------- 8---------7----- ---------------- Watch out ! When you get to the verse it goes : _______________________________X2 Strum____________________________ ---------------- 0---------0----- 0--------------- ---------------- -------0----0-0- 8---------7----- 8--------------- ---------------- -----0---------- 0---------0----- 0--------------- ---------------- ---0------------ 0---------0----- 0--------------- ---------------- --3------2------ x---------x----- x--------------- ---------------- 3---------2----- 8---------7----- 8--------------- ---------------- Strum____________________________ Strum____________________________ 7 or 0---------- ---------------- 0--------------- ---------------- 7--------------- ---------------- 8--------------- ---------------- 0--------------- ---------------- 0--------------- ---------------- 0--------------- ---------------- 0--------------- ---------------- x--------------- ---------------- x--------------- ---------------- 7--------------- ---------------- 8--------------- ---------------- Strum____________________________ 0--------------- ---------------- 7--------------- ---------------- 0--------------- ---------------- 0--------------- ---------------- x--------------- ---------------- 7--------------- ---------------- Then play intro again, and back to verse. Chorus : This is just a suggestion, voicings are up to you. _______________________________X4 a-------5------- --------3------- 33----33----33-- 8-------3------- --------1------- 11----11----11-- 0-------0------- --------0------- 00----00----00-- 9-------4------- --------2------- 22----22----22-- a-------5------- --------3------- 33----33----33-- x-------x------- --------x------- xx----xx----xx-- Then back to intro, then verse and so on. Any corrections ? ------------------------------------------------------------------ Strawberry Hill First, though, I should say (just in case you don't know) that the series of six numbers for each chord are the six strings of the guitar, lowest to highest, and that the numbers indicate fret number. VERSE: E: 022100 A: X02100 and/or X02140 (repeat a lot) verse 2 chords (optional) : E: 076800 A: 576800 (repeat a lot) CHORUS: E: 022100 B: 799800 A: 577600 (play E-B-B-A 4x ...except for last chorus, which is 8x) -------------------------------------------------------------------- (Now for the rambling.) I'm a chord-oriented kind of guy, so this I know: the verses alternate between E major and A major ninth (add#11) chords, and the chorus ("It's our duty...") is an E major -- B major(add4) -- A major(add2) -- E major progression. If that confuses you any, here are the fingerings I use: After that bizarre opening guitar riff, the actual song kicks in and you hear an "e-a-b-e" melody in the guitar so I usually start it with a regular open-voiced E major chord (fingered 022100, lowest string to highest--and I just keep it in standard tuning, by the way). Then for the A chord I just lift one finger--the one on the A-string--and mute the low E-string (X02100). I know there's an added d# in that A chord at times in the recording so you can add some color by alternating that last fingering with X02140 if your pinky can reach. The way I just wrote all this is a jumble, I know, so here's the way I play those chords, plain and simple: E: 022100 A: X02100 and X02140 (alternating back and forth) For the second (?) verse, when the piano comes in with that "d#-e-b...d#-e-b...d#-e-b" melody, I like to use different voicings for those chords and change the E major to an E major seventh as well, like this: E: 076800 A: 576800 These changes for the second verse are just optional, of course, but I think they really add a lot, and on top of that, with these fingerings you can even fingerpick the piano melody on the highest three strings. Now the chorus chords are much simpler; you just put your fingers in a barred position (but without actually barring) nd slide around on the neck: E: 022100 B: 799800 A: 577600 Now that I've given it another listen, I think most of the E major chords have an added 6th (c#), which can be fingered 022120. (Even if that c# is only part of one of the guitar melodies going on, this chord still works well and sounds right.) E major's also in first inversion a lot (that is, with a g# in the bass and not an e... 4x2100, 4x2x20, 476800, etc.) I still have no clue as to what exact voicings are used in the song. tabbed by Luke lukemartinchandler@hotmail.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Strawberry Hill On : Red House Painters I By : The Red House Painters Tuning : EbADGBE Note : I used the same tuning as in Mother (the previous song in the album). Luke Chandler is probably right about the tuning, and the voicings. The only difference is that my version enables you to mimic the strange bass harmonies. Plus, I think Luke is quite wrong about the chord progression, which is just a bit more complicated. In the intro the notes are repeated through a delay pedal, I think, but I've still transcribed them. Intro : There's that arpeggio with a strong phasing effect that keeps me from tabbing it out.
